Gainsborough is a large, predominantly rural Lincolnshire constituency centred on the town of Gainsborough beside the River Trent. It extends across a wide area of West Lindsey and adjoining countryside, including Market Rasen, Caistor and numerous villages. Gainsborough is the largest western centre, while Market Rasen and Caistor provide smaller market-town focuses farther east. Much of the constituency consists of farmland, villages and open countryside, with the Lincolnshire Wolds influencing the eastern landscape. Settlement is widely dispersed and road links are more important than continuous urban development. The seat therefore combines a historic riverside town with several smaller centres and a substantial rural hinterland.
