Local context
Ely and East Cambridgeshire covers the cathedral city of Ely and a broad rural area stretching across the eastern Cambridgeshire Fens. It includes towns and communities such as Soham and villages spread across low-lying agricultural countryside. Ely is the principal service and transport centre, standing on slightly higher ground above the surrounding fen landscape. Beyond the city, settlement is dispersed among small towns and villages connected by rural roads and rail routes. Drainage channels, rivers and flat farmland are defining physical features of much of the constituency. The seat therefore combines a compact historic city with one of England’s most distinctive rural landscapes rather than a continuous urban area.

The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of All Saints Milton in the Diocese of Ely
We need to rebuild part of the retaining wall to our churchyard, to preserve the historic boundary and make it structurally sound. The historic wall is part of the curtilage of the Grade ll* listed church and sits within a conservation area. It is in a state of partial collapse and being nearly a meter higher than the car park below is very dangerous. It will ensure safe access to the much-used church, church hall and churchyard for present and future generations. The project will teach local students heritage skills and enable church volunteers to learn how to maintain the wall. Media students will document the process, which can be used as a resource for building students to broaden their understanding and knowledge of heritage skills. Once completed the Eco church team can develop the planned contemplative wildflower area, part of the A Rocha gold award they are working towards.
