East Hampshire is a largely rural constituency in the eastern part of Hampshire. It includes towns such as Alton and Petersfield, together with smaller communities and villages across the South Downs and surrounding countryside. Petersfield lies close to the South Downs National Park and acts as an important centre in the south, while Alton provides a separate market-town focus farther north. Much of the constituency consists of farmland, woodland, chalk downland and villages separated by open country. Road and rail routes connect the area with Winchester, Guildford, London and the south coast. The seat therefore has a dispersed settlement pattern and a strongly rural character despite containing several sizeable towns.
