Local context
Easington constituency covers much of the east Durham coast and former coalfield area. It includes Peterlee, Seaham, Easington, Horden, Murton and a network of neighbouring towns and villages. The constituency is shaped by a series of former mining communities spread along and just inland from the North Sea coast, with open countryside and reclaimed industrial land between them. Peterlee is one of the largest service centres, while Seaham provides a separate coastal town in the north. The shoreline, cliffs and coastal paths are prominent physical features, while the inland edge links toward other County Durham settlements. The seat therefore combines several distinct towns rather than one continuous urban centre.
