Darlington constituency is centred on the County Durham town of Darlington and contains most of its main urban area. It includes the town centre and neighbourhoods extending outward through areas such as Cockerton, Haughton, Harrowgate Hill, Mowden and Eastbourne, together with a limited rural fringe around Heighington and Coniscliffe. Darlington is the clear commercial and transport centre, with a compact built-up area surrounded by farmland. Railways have played a major role in the town’s development, and modern road and rail routes continue to connect it with Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire. The constituency is consequently more town-focused than the larger rural seats around it.
