Colne Valley lies to the west and south-west of Huddersfield in Kirklees. It includes a chain of communities along the Colne Valley such as Slaithwaite, Marsden, Golcar and Linthwaite, together with villages and suburbs on the western side of Huddersfield and areas toward the Pennine moors. Settlement is strongly shaped by the valley floor, where towns and villages follow the river, roads and railway, while steep slopes rise to open upland on either side. The constituency therefore combines former textile and industrial communities with rural Pennine landscapes. Huddersfield provides the nearest large urban centre, but the seat itself is characterised by several distinct valley settlements rather than one town.
