Local context

About this constituency

Colchester constituency is centred on the historic Essex city of Colchester and contains much of its main urban area. It includes the city centre and neighbourhoods such as Greenstead, New Town, Lexden, Shrub End and parts of northern and western Colchester. The constituency is predominantly urban and suburban, with the city providing a single strong commercial, cultural and transport centre. The River Colne runs through the area, while parks, former military land and university-related development create distinct spaces within the wider built-up landscape. Toward the outer boundary the city gives way to villages and countryside that largely fall into neighbouring constituencies, keeping this seat focused mainly on Colchester itself.

Household composition

A broad view of household types in this constituency. Project Open Gov uses the four broad groups supplied by the Commons Library so the presentation remains consistent across the UK.

Families with dependent children31.2% · 14,727 households
Other single-family households33.0% · 15,572 households

Disability and day-to-day activities

The source records whether day-to-day activities are limited and uses separate person-level tables for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

114,325 people in the source baseCensus 2021Source comparison: England & Wales
Day-to-day activities limited a lot6.6% · 7,569 people
Day-to-day activities limited a little10.4% · 11,843 people
Not disabled under the Equality Act83.0% · 94,913 people

Comparison note: the workbook uses different source terminology across the UK: England & Wales uses “Disabled under the Equality Act”, while Scotland and Northern Ireland use “Disabled” / “Non-disabled”. Project Open Gov therefore preserves the source categories and does not present them as one single like-for-like UK legal definition.

Disability figures come from the Commons Library constituency workbook. This profile uses the person-level tables only; the workbook also contains separate household-level disability tables which are not used here. View disability source ↗
