City of Durham constituency is centred on Durham city and extends into surrounding villages and former mining communities. It includes the historic city centre, university areas and residential districts, together with places such as Brandon, Coxhoe, Bowburn, Sherburn and parts of the countryside surrounding the Wear valley. Durham itself provides the principal commercial, educational and transport centre, while the outer communities are smaller and more dispersed. The River Wear and the steep wooded landscape around the historic peninsula are distinctive features of the city, giving way to farmland and former coalfield settlements farther out. The seat therefore combines a compact cathedral city with a wider semi-rural and village hinterland.
