Local context
Castle Point is a south Essex constituency centred on Canvey Island and the mainland communities of Benfleet, Hadleigh and Thundersley. Most of the seat lies close to the Thames Estuary, with Canvey forming a distinct low-lying island settlement connected to the mainland by road. The mainland side contains a continuous suburban area along the higher ground north of the estuary, while marshes and coastal landscapes remain around parts of the shoreline. The constituency also includes a small adjoining part of Basildon. Its geography is therefore strongly shaped by the estuary: dense residential areas sit alongside sea walls, creeks, marshland and open views across the lower Thames.
