Carlisle constituency is centred on the city of Carlisle but extends beyond the continuous urban area into rural communities toward Brampton, Wetheral, Longtown and the Scottish border. Carlisle is by far the largest centre and sits where the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril meet. The urban core contains the city centre, residential neighbourhoods and industrial areas, while the outer wards become progressively more rural, with villages, farmland and open countryside. The constituency’s northern edge reaches the border country, and its eastern side follows communities toward the Eden Valley. It therefore combines a compact regional city with a substantial surrounding rural and village hinterland.
