Local context
Canterbury constituency combines the historic city of Canterbury with Whitstable and a collection of villages and rural communities to the north and east. The city provides the largest inland centre, while Whitstable forms a distinct coastal town around the Thames Estuary and North Sea coast. Between them lie places such as Blean, Chestfield, Seasalter and smaller villages across farmland and wooded countryside. The constituency therefore has a mixed character: a compact university and cathedral city, a separate seaside town, suburban neighbourhoods and rural areas all fall within the same boundary. The landscape becomes increasingly open away from the main settlements, particularly around Blean Forest and the countryside east of Canterbury.
