Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket brings together two of Suffolk’s main market towns with a broad rural area between and around them. Bury St Edmunds forms the western centre of the constituency, while Stowmarket lies farther east along the A14 corridor. The seat also includes Thurston, Elmswell, Woolpit, Ixworth, Stanton and a wide collection of smaller villages. Outside the two principal towns, settlement is dispersed through largely agricultural countryside, with villages linked by local roads and the main east–west transport corridor. The constituency therefore combines substantial historic market towns with smaller rural communities rather than forming one continuous urban area.
