Bridgwater constituency is centred on the Somerset town of Bridgwater and extends north to Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge and west toward the Quantock foothills. It also includes North Petherton, Cannington, Wembdon, Puriton, Woolavington and villages across the low-lying Somerset Levels. Bridgwater is the largest inland centre, while Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge form a separate coastal and estuarine focus near the mouth of the River Parrett. Much of the countryside between the towns is flat and agricultural, crossed by drainage channels and rivers, with higher ground appearing toward the Quantocks. The seat therefore combines a substantial market and industrial town, smaller coastal centres and a wide rural hinterland.

About this award
In restoring the bells of Middlezoy Church to their full capacity we want to ensure that a well maintained, tuneful peal of bells can be rung for coming centuries, as our ancestors did for us. Our legacy will be to preserve the important English tradition of ‘change ringing’ locally and its key role in the celebration of individual and community events, an intangible cultural heritage skill as defined by UNESCO. We will be able to continue to practice the ancient skill of change ringing and pass this on to the younger generation in our area. Completion of the project will raise the profile of the heritage of our ancient church and its place in village life. it will ensure ongoing awareness and commitment from locals to enjoy and maintain this heritage for future generations.

About this award
WWT envisions a future where wetlands are embedded into urban life, transforming towns into climate resilient, nature-rich communities. Through this project, we aim to demonstrate how blue infrastructure can tackle climate-related challenges, from flooding to biodiversity loss, while enhancing wellbeing. As a town sitting within the ecologically important Somerset Levels and Moors NCA, and one committed to supporting Somerset’s declared climate and nature emergencies, Bridgwater is the ideal place to model this approach. We will deliver interventions and equip residents with the skills to advance a co-developed neighbourhood climate action plan. We will use the lessons learnt in Bridgwater as a blueprint for urban centres across the region, with resource dedicated to scoping new communities to benefit from adopting similar nature-based approaches to climate resilience. The project legacy will be more resilient urban centres within the Somerset waterscape, empowered to lead on climate action for people and nature.
