Local context

About this constituency

Bolton South and Walkden crosses the boundary between Bolton and Salford. Its Bolton wards include Farnworth, Great Lever, Harper Green, Kearsley and Rumworth, while the Salford section contains Little Hulton and both Walkden wards. The constituency is largely urban and suburban and follows a continuous settled corridor between southern Bolton and western Salford. Farnworth and Walkden are the two most distinct town centres, with Little Hulton and Kearsley linking the areas between them. Housing, commercial areas and transport routes dominate most of the seat, although some open land remains around the edges. The cross-borough boundary reflects the close physical connection between these neighbouring Greater Manchester communities.

Description last reviewed 30 August 2026.

Household composition

A broad view of household types in this constituency. Project Open Gov uses the four broad groups supplied by the Commons Library so the presentation remains consistent across the UK.

Families with dependent children35.5% · 16,732 households
Other single-family households30.2% · 14,232 households

Disability and day-to-day activities

The source records whether day-to-day activities are limited and uses separate person-level tables for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

123,536 people in the source baseCensus 2021Source comparison: England & Wales
Day-to-day activities limited a lot9.4% · 11,596 people
Day-to-day activities limited a little9.3% · 11,530 people
Not disabled under the Equality Act81.3% · 100,410 people

Comparison note: the workbook uses different source terminology across the UK: England & Wales uses “Disabled under the Equality Act”, while Scotland and Northern Ireland use “Disabled” / “Non-disabled”. Project Open Gov therefore preserves the source categories and does not present them as one single like-for-like UK legal definition.

Disability figures come from the Commons Library constituency workbook. This profile uses the person-level tables only; the workbook also contains separate household-level disability tables which are not used here. View disability source ↗
