Blackley and Middleton South crosses the boundary between Manchester and Rochdale. On the Manchester side it includes Blackley, Crumpsall, Harpurhey, Moston and Charlestown, while the Rochdale section covers East Middleton and South Middleton. The constituency is almost entirely urban and forms part of the continuous northern Greater Manchester built-up area. Its southern neighbourhoods lie relatively close to central Manchester, while Middleton provides a distinct town centre toward the north. Housing ranges from dense older inner-suburban streets to larger post-war estates and lower-density residential areas. The present boundary therefore links north Manchester communities with the southern part of Middleton rather than following a single local-authority boundary.
