Barnsley South covers the southern and south-eastern parts of the Barnsley borough. It includes Wombwell, Hoyland, Darfield, Worsbrough, Stairfoot and the Dearne communities around Goldthorpe, Bolton upon Dearne and Thurnscoe, together with Kingstone and Rockingham. The constituency is made up of several distinct former industrial towns and villages rather than one dominant centre. Barnsley Council identifies Hoyland, Goldthorpe and Wombwell among the borough’s principal towns, and these sit alongside smaller local centres spread across the seat. Residential areas are separated in places by open land and former industrial sites, while the Dearne valley and transport routes toward Rotherham and Doncaster shape the eastern side of the constituency.
