Barnsley North covers the northern side of Barnsley and a group of towns and villages immediately beyond the town centre. Its wards include Central and Old Town as well as Cudworth, Monk Bretton, Royston, Darton East and West, North East and St Helens. The constituency therefore combines part of urban Barnsley with separate communities such as Cudworth, Royston, Darton and Mapplewell. Barnsley Council groups many of these places into its North and North East area councils, reflecting their distinct local centres. Built-up neighbourhoods are interspersed with former industrial land, parks and countryside toward the borough boundary, so the seat moves from the town centre into a series of smaller settlements rather than forming one continuous suburban district.
