What this bill is about
The Nature’s Rights Bill [HL] would recognise nature as a legal subject and set up a legal framework for rights intended to protect and restore it. It would create a legal duty of care for public bodies, businesses and individuals, and provide ways for those rights to be enforced through dispute resolution and legal mechanisms. The bill also proposes governance and tribunal arrangements, including a Nature Guardianship Council, Bioregional Councils and a Nature’s Rights Tribunal, alongside provisions for implementation, scrutiny and periodic review.
What it would do
- Recognise nature as a legal subject and establish protections and rights for nature.
- Create a duty of care for public bodies, businesses and individuals relating to those rights.
- Set out an integrated rights framework and mechanisms for dispute resolution and legal enforcement.
- Establish governance and adjudication bodies, including a Nature Guardianship Council, Bioregional Councils and a Nature’s Rights Tribunal.
