An election held to fill a seat that becomes vacant between general elections.
A by-election is an election held when a seat in the House of Commons becomes vacant between general elections. This can happen, for example, if an MP resigns, dies, is elevated to the House of Lords, or loses their seat through another process. A by-election chooses a new MP for that constituency, but it does not decide the whole composition of the House of Commons.
