What this bill is about
The Representation of the People Bill would make changes to voting and elections, including reducing the voting age from 18 to 16 for UK parliamentary elections and specified other votes. It would also update rules for electoral registration and the administration and conduct of elections, referendums and recall petitions. The Bill would include changes connected to election agent addresses, political expenditure and donations, and information to be included in electronic campaign material, alongside enforcement measures and rules about disqualification for certain offences linked to hostility towards people involved in elections.
What it would do
- Extend the right to vote to 16 and 17 year olds for UK parliamentary elections and specified other elections, with related registration provisions.
- Change voter registration processes, including allowing registration or alteration without an application, and making related rules for duties and safeguards.
- Update election and referendum/recall administration, including nomination processes, returning officer and candidate identification requirements, and absent voting provisions.
- Make changes to election spending and political donations, including rules for electronic campaigning material and related enforcement and sanctions.
- Provide for certain offences and disqualification provisions, including where offences are aggravated by hostility towards people involved in elections, referendums or recall petitions.
