The Armed Forces Bill would renew the legal framework in the Armed Forces Act 2006 and make changes across service justice, including measures to improve how victims are supported, and steps aimed at tackling harmful behaviour such as sexual harm and domestic abuse within the service justice system. It would also set up a Defence Housing Service, add powers related to drones and other uncrewed devices on defence property, and modernise service policing and investigation arrangements. In addition, the Bill would place the Armed Forces Covenant duty on a wider statutory footing.
What it would do
- Continue the Armed Forces Act 2006 by providing for its duration, including extension by Order in Council.
- Expand how the Armed Forces Covenant applies, requiring specified public bodies to have due regard to Covenant principles.
- Create the Defence Housing Service and make provision for defence housing and related property arrangements.
- Introduce service justice and service policing changes, including new measures for prevention of offences involving uncrewed devices and for protection and support relating to sexual harm and domestic abuse.
